Hale & Wise

Most successful people don't get a mid-life crisis. They get something quieter.

Identity Drift: gradually becoming someone you never consciously chose to be. It was never laziness or weakness — and it has a way back. People who make the return are Intentional Changers.

The mirror

You can't see your self-model. You can only see through it.

Your self-model is like your eyes. You see the whole world through it — which is exactly why you can't see it. You only find out what your eyes look like in a mirror. The self that's drifted is invisible the same way: you've been looking through it all along, so the person you've gradually become never once appeared in view.

So we built the mirror. Two one-day workshops. A written handbook. A witnessed community. And, from 2027, a residential retreat. Together, the program is called Intentional Changers — first you see the gap between intention and action, then you rebuild your steering without shame, then you ask what the direction should serve.

The workshops · Day One & Day Two

Two days. One journey. Each stands alone.

Functioning is not flourishing. One day, in person, small rooms — you don't re-read the book, you do the work, with other people, and leave with the handbook in your own handwriting.

Both days run on one rule from behavioral science: let the doing lead. You won't wait for motivation, clarity, or the right Monday — you'll act first, small and keepable, and let the feeling catch up.

Day One · Coherence

Functioning Is Not Flourishing

See your own intention–action gap. Felt, not explained. Stop mistaking dis-integration for laziness.

One day · near Irvine, CA · $350 founding rate
Day Two · Steering

Back to Center

For anyone whose fastest way to survive the day quietly narrowed their life — overwork, control, scrolling, relief of any kind. Rebuild your steering, without shame.

One day · near Irvine, CA · $350 founding rate

Twelve seats. That's the whole room. Both days include the written handbook, Intentional Changers — From Drifting to Navigating — your answers, not our slides.

You leave with

  • a clear-eyed portrait of who you've become — and which parts you actually chose;
  • the real mechanism behind the 4am unease (it was never laziness or weakness);
  • your next chapter in your own handwriting — a direction sentence, three waypoints, and one committed change with a start date;
  • and a day at a table with twelve people who get it.

The 4am voice goes quiet once it's been answered.

The Trust Circle

The work holds when it's witnessed.

Most high-functioning people don't need more information. They need to keep showing up — with other people — until what they know becomes how they live.

The Trust Circle is a confidential monthly witness circle: ninety minutes on Zoom, the last Sunday of every month, where you recalibrate, get witnessed, and remember what your future self is counting on. Unrecorded. A circle, not a webinar.

This is the holding structure. Every tradition that has ever made change last — from recovery rooms to monasteries — converged on the same design: show up, on schedule, with others, and act before you feel like it. The Circle is that design, kept simple: a scheduled, witnessed practice that keeps the doing going until the change holds.

One map, three books.

The trilogy is the map the workshops walk. Coherence · Steering · Wisdom — always in that order.

Coherence

Living and Lying

"What pulled me apart?"

Steering

Long Addiction, Short Recovery

"How did relief take over, and how do I get back to center?"

Wisdom

The Stranger in the Scanner

"Once I can steer, what should govern the direction?"

Hale & Wise is the book series and practice of Neil W. Smith — the name comes from the Old English hāl, whole. Neil is a writer, recovering alcoholic, and late-vocation neuroscience student; the workshops and the Trust Circle grew out of his long inquiry into why capable people can know so much about how to live — and still struggle to live it.

The Trustworthy Self

The third movement — Wisdom — deserves more than a day. The Trustworthy Self is a residential retreat — early 2027. Once you can steer: what should the direction serve? Small rooms. Deep work. The interest list hears first.
